Don't get Banned by Google
This is a simple question... Are you asking Google to penalize your website? Part 2 - No one is wanting to be banned by Google but you may get banned or already been banned by doing
things Google does not like about your site.
I am surprised as to how many webmaster take so much time to put up a website only to do things that Google will evidentially find and ban their sites and the worse thing of all the things they are doing
will NOT help their PageRank at all.
Some of the most know things webmasters are doing that will in time get their website banned by Google and other search engines are...
- Hidden Text - They flood their webpage with hidden text keywords... for example, lets say you have a white background on your website and you use white text for tons of text which users will not be able
to see it unless the use "ctrl + a " which will highlight all text on the page. By using #FFFFFF for their text on a white background Google and other search engines will see this as SPAMMING and ban your
site or the very least not give it any PR so don't do it.
- Alt image tag spamming - This is another way many webmasters think they can get better PageRank but it will only cost them in the long run and get their site banned. They cram keywords over and over in
their "alt image tag". You use the "alt image tag" because if a user visits your website and the graphic will not load or is disabled by their web browser, the text will appear instead of the graphic.
- Meta Tag Stuffing - What I am talking about here is when a person throws in the same exact keyword over and over again as the example below.
For example, the following website is trying to rank well for "watches".
 Google
doesn't use Meta Tags when ranking websites but will penalize websites that SPAM their META TAGS.... so, why would anyone do something like this. Stupidity I guess.

This is a simple question... Are you asking Google to penalize your website? Part 1 - No one is wanting to be banned by Google but you may get banned or already been banned by doing
things Google does not like about your site.
There are a couple things you can do in order to see if Google has banned your website or just moved your ranking so you don't see your listing anymore.
- Check Google's search results - Go to Google and enter your entire URL into the Google search box. If you know your site was listed with Google and you type in your website domain and it brings up the
results page that says " Sorry, no information is available for the URL www.yourwebsitename.com then chances are your website has been banned by Google or at least is no longer in their database.
- View the Google Toolbar - You must have Google Toolbar to verify this test. You can download the toolbar by going to http://toolbar.google.com is you don't
already have it on your computer. Once you have the toolbar go to your website and check "PageRank". You will see one of the below results.
In Example A you will see your PageRank which will show up in the color Green which means your website is listed in Google's data base. In the below example its PR7 which
is very good.

In Example B you will see your PageRank is 0 but at least your site is in Google's data base so your site has not been banned. This could mean your site is NEW and Google
has just found you site.
Example B
In Example C you will notice the PageRank is all Grey in color which means a couple things. Maybe your site is new and Google has not indexed your site yet or if
you know your site was listed at Google and it's now showing all Grey it means Google has removed your website from their data base which means you have been BANNED by Google which is not a good
standing by any means.

htaccess | Hotlink Protection
Bandwidth theft or "hotlinking" is the direct linking to a website's files (images, video, etc.) without permission. This can be costly to you if you are not aware of such theft and bandwidth is expensive and no one should be able to hotlink your copyrighted images unless you allow them to do so.
Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred from a website to a user's computer. When you view a webpage, you are using that site's data transfer to display the their website or files on their server. Web hosts charges are based on the amount of data transferred per month and if your site is over it's monthly bandwidth, it's billed for the extra data per GB which runs $1.50 to $3.00 per GB you are over with your allowed bandwidth and if you have a few dozen people hotlinking your images it will cost you.It's against the law to hotlink and if you find someone hotlinking your images you should do a "whois" and find out who their host is and contact them and most cases the host will contact the hotlinker and put a stop to it asap and some times even remove their account if they don't comply. The way to protect your images at your site is with .htaccess file with the below lines. RewriteEngine On

that you have not allowed to do so.

Let Google Read Your Keywords First.
Google views web pages from top left to bottom right... and most websites have their tables set up like example A with their navigation text in the left cell of the table but if you make your table like example B and leave that top cell blank then Google will start viewing the text in the left
top column which is blank and then go to the right cell which has all your keywords or at least your <H1></H1> tag so Google will read that first and then go down that cell to all your other keywords.Example A  Example B

Don't get Banned by Google - by accident

would like to start today by pointing out Part 1 and Part 2 pertains to on-page optimization and Part 3 will be talking about off-page optimization.

Today we will talk about off-page optimization... and we should first dispell some popular myths.
- If a "link farm" is to to your website you will get penalized and or banned from Google - FALSE
- If unrelated websites are linking to you, your website will get penalized - FALSE
- Page Rank 1 websites won't help you because Google does not display PR1 websites in the backlink list - FALSE
None of the above are true statements for the simple fact that: Anything a competitor could do to harm your website would NEVER be penalized by Google.
Let's think about this for a minute... If
any of the above could actually penalize your website, the how many webmasters would simply add their competitors websites from a link farm website, unrelated websites and low PR websites just to hurt your
ranking... it would be quite a few I'm sure. The only way you can get penalized by off-page optimization is if YOU link out to "bad neighborhoods", which would be:
- Link Farms
- Penalized websites (websites that are "grey barred" by Google but use to have a PR

Blocking SearchBots | robots.txt
robots.txt and how to use it.
At some point in time you may want to block searchbots from certain pages you have at your site. You may want to block searchbots from pages that are for internal use only as well as directories that you store scripts at as well as pages that are still under construction.To block searchbots you will need to set up a robots.txt at your site. The searchbots will look for the robots.txt file in your root domain ie.. http://www.yoursitedomain.com/robots.txt so be sure to add one if you have not done so. The format for the robots.txt file consists of records. Each record consists of two fields : a User-agent line and one or more Disallow: lines. The following allows all robots to visit all files because the wildcard "*" specifies all robots.
User-agent: *
Disallow:
This one keeps all robots out.
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
The next one bars all robots from the cgi-bin and images directories:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /images/
This one bans whateverbot from all files on the server:

This one bans keeps googlebot from getting at the rayne.html file:
User-agent: googlebot
Disallow: rayne.html
Creating Pages that Search Engines Love
TITLE tags tell a browser what text is to be displayed in the browsers title bar and very important to search engines. All searchbots read the page titles and use that information to determine what the page is about so if you have a keyword between the TITLE tags that your competitors don't have, you have a better chance off getting closer to the top of the search results.The TITLE is one of the most important SEO components you can have but most sites don't use the TITLE tags wisely and don't place useful keywords in them. When using the TITLE tag DO NOT use "Welcome to" and then your site name... that is a waste of space and useless. Only use keyword enriched words that describe that page in the TITLE tag. Give the search engines the best clues about your site content by using keyword phrase in the TITLE tag. Do it like this. - Place the TITLE tag just below the <HEAD> tag.
- Place 30 to 50 characters between the <TITLE> and </TITLE> tag and that includes white spaces.
- Be sure to use your most important Keyword phrases at the beginning of the TITLE.
- Use the Pipe | to separate your keywords i.e. SEO | Optimization Software
Be sure to limit the number of two-letter words as well as common words known as stop words such as the, as, a, you because search engines will ignore them so no since in using them.
File Names | Directory Structure
When building or adding pages to your site try using file names that describe your content with key words. Designing your site around a good directory structure that is search engine friendly will only help your site get spidered more often and get better ranking as well as top placement for your top keywords at your site. Traffic is what its all about... Instead of just naming a file krb983/index.html try naming it after your site content i.e. seo-blog/index.html and that also applies to images as well... i.e. seo-blog.gif and not 120x60.gif - TIP: - Don't ever name and image with the sizes of the image. Norton IS has already collected many banner sizes that get uploaded automatically to the user of Norton IS via auto updates so many people are not aware that certain size images are hidden from you because of Norton IS.
TEST: - If you are using Norton IS - Make two banners with the same sizes as these are named - 468x60.gif and 120x60.gif and upload them to your server. Now view the page to make sure the images are coming up. If you see them then your settings in Norton IS - Norton Anti Spam_Ad
Blocking is set to off. Now turn that setting to on and then reload the page the images are on and check to see if they are gone. So don't name your images with the width of the image and name the image with
keywords and not just 120x60.gif -
Text Formatting
You can tell Search Engines what your most important keywords are any given page in many ways. If you make the text different from the other text on the same page, the search engines will assume that text is more important than the other text since its different. Below are a few ways to help change the look of your keywords.
- Using H1 tag
- Put the keyword in bullet lists
- Making the keyword BOLD
- Make the text Italic
- Underline the keywords
- First letter of each word uppercase and all other letters lower case.
Don't over using the above techniques because the search engines will see that as a way of SPAMMING which will only hurt your site. But if you do it sparingly it will increase your ranking with search engines which means more traffic.
Keyword Density
Another important concept is keyword density. When someone searches for a keyword phrase the SE's will look at all pages that contain the keyword phrase and check the density which is the ratio of the search phrase to the total number of words in the page.Lets say you done a search for resume paper and the SE found a page that had 400 words and had the phrase resume paper on the page 10 times -- thats a total of 20 words. Because 20 is 5% of 400 the keyword density is 5 percent. Keyword density is very important and should not be abused or over done by putting to many of the same keyword in your content. If the SE find that search phrase has made up 50% of the words in the page it may think you have designed your page just for Search Engines attention and ignore it all together, but if the keyword density is to low you may find the SE's are giving other sites more relevant for the search... Its all a matter of trial and error.
The Importance of Keywords
When a site is designed we tend to make the site designed around our own personal taste and not thinking about SE's but you really should put yourself in the surfers shoes and use an old design concept which "You should think like the prey" and put yourself in the surfers shoes.Having your site look nice is one thing but being able to get traffic to your site for looking nice is not going to happen. You need to optimize your site for Search Engines or you are wasting your time.
We all want as much traffic to our site and that starts with good keywords and keyword placement. You can always go to your competitors website and see what keywords they are using to give you some insight on what works well for them which is a starting point for you to pick relevant keywords. One of the best ways to come up with relevant keywords is using a keyword tool such as Overtures "Keyword Selector Tool" which will give you different variations of keywords that you type in. Getting Banned by Google - by accident

Yesterday I talked about off-page optimization and some myths that should be cleared up by now so let' continue.
RECAP: The only way you can get penalized by off-page optimization is if YOU link out to "bad neighborhoods", which would be:

Now you would think this would be a pretty easy thing to stay away from, right? WRONG!
EXAMPLE: Lets use this as an example, Let's say I have a website and
exchanged links with your website... At the time of the exchange we both had a PR 5 and quality related which would be the idea trade. OK, now several month go by, and in the meantime, I'm doing all kinds of
"black-hat-SEO". Note: Black Hat SEO is simply doing all of the things that can get you banned by search engines as I mentioned in previous post.
After doing all
kinds of Black Hat SEO, Google decides to ban my website, which gives me a "gray barred" Page Rank as in the below image and my website is no longer in Google's index.
This is a very big problem because Google will penalize your website ranking because

Corey Rudl Dies in Auto Accident

When I received the email from Mr. Bill Colwell of "SEO Software Tool Experts" and began reading the email I never knew what to think. I know Mr.

The importance of Keyword Density
Keyword Density
This is given far greater importance in both Yahoo and MSN – in fact, their keyword density tolerance is slightly higher than that of Google. The trick here is not to over-do the keyword density (lest you
get punished by Google or even MSN for keyword spamming).
A good benchmark is to keep your keyword density at 3%. More can possibly help, but it's not necessary, and generally a range of 2% to 4% is fair enough. Contrary to some experts, keyword density in itself
is only as important as the other on-page factors, namely the title tag and the Meta tags (keywords and description both).
When trying to optimize your content, ensure that you follow this pattern:
- Include your keyword phrase in the first sentence of the paragraph for each header (the paragraph after each major heading).
- In your final paragraph (for each header), use your primary keyword phrase again. Preferably twice.
- In between, use combinations of your primary key phrase by splitting it up and using individual words, and throw in semantic uses to vary the nature of the content.
- Avoid using the keyword phrase too much – some SEO experts say that your keyword phrase should be used once in every paragraph and twice in your first and last paragraphs.
As always, these are guidelines that have come about after experience with several
websites. Your own experiences may differ. The key is to understand the general
principle.

Update your Site Content Often
In order to keep the SE's spiders coming back to your site you will need to update the content of your site often and keep it as unique as you can.
Don't expect the SE's robot spiders to keep coming back to your site if you never update your site's content.
SE's like site's that are updated often so be sure to update your site often. Some people update daily while others update bi-weekly or weekly. How ever often
you update, just make sure you update.
This will keep the SE's happy as well has make your site rank higher which in turn means you will receive a better placement of your site on the SE's for top
keywords you are using to gain traffic.
I personally update our site bi-weekly, at least most of the time and this seems to work for us but remember, what works for me may not work for you so you
will have to keep notes when you check SE's for relative keywords you may be checking for and see what's working for you and your site.
What is the robots.txt file
In order to place good with any Search Engine you will need to do certain things that will allow the spiders that are coming to your site be able to index your
entire site.
Be sure to use the robots.txt file so the SE's will know what's allowed to be indexed at your site.
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
The above is what I have in my robots.txt in which I do not want the SE's to spider my cgi-bin.
User-agent
The User-agent line specifies the robot. For example:
User-agent: googlebot
You may also use the wildcard charcter "*" to specify known robots:
User-agent: *
To see the names of the spider robots that are coming to your site check your own logs that are making requests to your robots.txt.
Disallow:
The second part of a record consists of the Disallow: These lines specify files and directories that you DO NOT want the spider robots to index. For example, the following line will tell the
spiders that it can not download (index) members.htm:
Disallow: members.htm
You may also specify directories:
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Which would block spiders from your cgi-bin directory.
If you leave the Disallow line blank, it indicates that ALL files may be retrieved. At least one disallow line must be present for each User-agent directive to be correct.
A completely empty robots.txt file is the same as if it were not present.
